Purpose
NBSSO is an academic club. We have social and cultural activities but the main emphasis
of the organization is academic excellence. We hope that students will appreciate the
importance of this endeavor, and we encourage them to utilize the services offered.
Services and Facilities
The following services and facilities are available to our members:
Tutoring
Qualified students in the organization provide tutoring and there is no charge for the service.
The tutoring is not restricted to the physical sciences, but also includes programs in the social
sciences and humanities.
Library
Our library is stocked with various text and reference books in the physical and social sciences,
past exams and magazines. We also stock catalogs and brochures from a variety of professional
and graduate schools.
Steven Biko Memorial Award
As an incentive for incoming freshman to maintain an interest in the sciences, NBSSO sponsors the
annual Steven Biko Memorial Award. This award is in memory of Steven Biko, a South African
student leader, for his contribution to the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. The
award is given to the student scoring the highest score on the Steven Biko exam along with a prize
of $100.
Award Ceremony and Alumni Reunion
This is a formal event held annually at the end of the spring semester. It is an occasion
where both past and present members of the organization get to meet each other and celebrate the
achievements of NBSSO members.
Our Members
Although we are a black student organization, no student of a different ethnic background has
ever been or will ever be denied access to the organizations services and facilities.
However all students who are accorded the privilege of using these facilities are expected
to participate in the clubs upkeep and activities, as the organization will not tolerate any parasites.
